The importance of this project lies in not only how people use the Piazza della Signoria, but how the street in general in used in Florence. The secret is to see Florence not only as the touristic city, but also as the cultural city. Piazza della Signoria and the Galleria degli Uffizi are, in reality, only a piece of a bigger cultural promenade that extends from the Palazzo Pitti, through Ponte Vecchio, and reaches the Piazza del Duomo. Palazzo Pitti and Galleria degli Uffizi are museums, and the Piazza della Signoria could also be considered an open air museum due the Loggia dei Lanzi and the presence of many statues of high artistic and historical values. This promenade is not something imaginary that can be read in the map of any city, but a real promenade since the narrow streets with porticos lead the right way. In this proposal, the Piazza della Signoria is incorporated in this system of porticos so that this big open space could become both a place to stay and at the same time would lead the way to the following places of interest. The introduction of the portico into the square would not only give importance to the existing sculptures and raising them to the level of museum art, but also provide shade and a place to sit to look at the statues. Moreover, the introduction of this element divides the square in two, bringing it to a more human and intimate scale.
